Jardin (eng. garden) is an evergreen, immersive inner courtyard located at Pohjoisesplanadi 37. On the terraces of Jardin, guests can enjoy food and drinks as well as the courtyard’s unique atmosphere—regardless of the season.
Jardin brings something entirely new to the restaurant culture and cityscape of Helsinki. Along the busy, urban Pohjoisesplanadi, a sheltered and warm inner courtyard awaits year-round, inviting visitors to step away for a moment from the city’s fast-paced rhythm.
The terraces of the restaurants and cafés opening onto the courtyard create a vibrant and diverse setting, reminiscent of a Southern European restaurant street. Jardin is home to, among others, the iconic Esplanadi landmark Café Esplanad and the French-style Brasserie Lionne led by Hans Välimäki. Together, the restaurants and cafés form an urban living room where food culture, social interaction, and city life blend into a natural and lively whole.
Bolder was responsible for the comprehensive concept design of Jardin’s inner courtyard, including branding, wayfinding design, and furniture selection. At the heart of the concept is the atmospheric charm and classic elegance of Southern European terrace culture, combined with fresh modern tones and a bold design language. Jardin’s garden-like environment is built around abundant greenery, Mediterranean-style planters, and carefully considered material and color choices in the signage, which together with the terrace furnishings create a layered and inviting space.
Classic warmth and modern freshness run side by side throughout the concept. The bold yet refined design language is reflected in Jardin’s visual identity, signage, and marketing materials. The result is a harmonious and distinctive whole that enriches Helsinki’s cityscape and offers a new way to experience Pohjoisesplanadi—in the calm of an inner courtyard, sheltered by a garden.
